Abstract
This essay aims to investigate the relation between the uncanny and the real in the narrative fabric of the character Beloved, from the homonymous book by Toni Morrison. To do so, I will take into consideration the concepts of repetition in literary theory (leitmotiv) and psychoanalysis, especially what Lacan calls tiquê, as the encounter of the real. The character sometimes appears as a ghost, sometimes as a traumatic memory, sometimes as a body of flesh and blood. Our analytical hypothesis is that, through the countless leitmotifs, Beloved represents the embodiment of the real, especially the traumatic real, in Morrison's narrative.
